Biodiversity

For local biodiversity enhancement project

At Bradford Green, we are dedicated to producing the most sustainable and best quality wildflower seed to support native biodiversity projects across the country. As a wholesale business, we can supply wildflower species as straights to retailers across the country – ensuring the supply chain is traceable, credible and most importantly as sustainable as possible. We use local UK growers to produce a range of wildflower species including native annuals and perennials. The process is meticulous, innovative and powered by solar panels to reduce emissions during the sowing, growing, harvesting and cleaning process.

Why is using Bradford Green’s sustainable seed important for biodiversity projects?

There are a number of biodiversity enhancement projects taking place all across the UK, in an attempt to restore many natural habitats, such as wildflower meadows, which have become endangered since intensive farming and industrialisation swept across the UK. Using sustainably produced seed for these projects ensures that the projects are not only successful but that they are also implemented using a sustainable supply chain and process. This means that not only are the projects creating habitats, carbon sinks and eco-systems but they are also minimising their impact on the environment at the same time.

Why is biodiversity enhancement important for the UK?

Although the climate crisis and global warming usually take centre stage when it comes to environmental sustainability, biodiversity is equally important. Both climate change and the biodiversity crisis are completely entwined and therefore one cannot be solved without addressing the other. In simple terms, biodiversity is the variety of animals, plants, fungi and microorganisms that make up all life on earth and it is essential for the human species to survive. Not only do animals and plants support and provide a food source but healthy soils and plant-life tackle global warming by capturing and storing carbon. Unfortunately, biodiversity is a serious issue in the UK. We are one of the worst scoring countries for biodiversity intactness out of all G7 nations and we have lost nearly 50% of our natural biodiversity since the start of the industrial revolution.

Thankfully, most of this loss of biodiversity – wildlife, habitats and green areas – can be reversed. This means that by undertaking biodiversity restoration projects, we have the chance to reverse the damage to our eco-system and natural spaces.

Are you looking for specific species?

At Bradford Green, we love to build lasting relationships, therefore please let us know which seed species you are looking for and we can confirm if this is already part of our product range. If we do not currently grow and process this species, we will work with you to ensure supply of the species and the volume you are looking for.
